Business Owner's 2017 Year-End Checklist

My co-worker reminded me yesterday that we had 16 shopping days left before Christmas.  I truly enjoy the holidays…the once-a-year food indulgences at our big Thanksgiving dinner and the feeling of joy during Christmas season. But, I was also thinking that W-2s and 1099s are due at the end of January, tangible personal property schedules March 1st, and the list went on and on in my mind. This is what I do and have done for the past 23 years. As a business owner, you think more about generating income more than about the tax compliances required of your business. Below is a checklist to help you end 2017 with a bang…and begin 2018 in stride.

Payroll:

  • File Employees’ W-2 and W-3 Summary by January 31
  • File Employer’s Annual Federal Unemployment (FUTA - 940) Tax Return by January 31
  • File 1099MISC forms to recipients and the IRS by January 31
  • File Employer’s Annual Information Return of Tip Income and Allocated Tips (8027) by February 28. By April 2 if electronic.

Other Returns:

  • File Tangible Personal Property Schedule by March 1
  • File Corporate/LLC Annual Report by April 1
  • File City/County Business Tax Returns (aka Business Licenses) by April 15
